Community Education

Plans for community education by promoters have been elaborated after interviews and community meetings. They also reflect, in a general way, topics of interest to other organizations.

Sheaf/Espiga will begin with training of “rural promoters”. A “rural promoter” is a community member who has received practical training in issues of importance to communities, for example: in animal science, human health promotion, or literacy. This training will be based on the ‘chain-link’ method, that is, the passing on of training and information from experienced workers to those who live and work in the field.

The plan involves raising the level of consciousness of the rural promoters in the local communities through a series of practical workshops. Those trained will, in turn, become community educators. Thus, these rural promoters will disseminate to their friends and neighbours the educational materials and information given them.

It must be emphasized that the training modules as envisioned will touch the most important themes for rural development in Nicaragua.

Objectives for the Year 2008

  1. 100% of the rural promoters will be trained in the practice of agricultural production.

  2. 100% of these promoters will be able to manage a statistical system in order to promote preventative health care and the use of alternative medicine.

  3. 90% will be trained to contribute to community development and to strengthen community organizations to promote local development.

  4. 100% of promoters will have a clear vision of gender issues and the role of women and men in leadership training.

We hope that you will join us in our passionate love of the people of Nicaragua, of Central America more broadly, and, indeed, the people of the two-thirds world. We hope that you will entrust Sheaf/Espiga with financial support, but, even more importantly, we hope that you will find your own ways – study, prayer, visits, engagement in your own local community – to let your own passion show.

We look forward to working with you in any way we can. Please contact us!

It really is the “right” thing to do!

And the wonderful surprise is that those who serve receive both joy and fulfillment.

Welcome!
